18-year-old charged with attempted murder following Tuesday shooting in Wilmington
An 18-year-old Wilmington man has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of another man Tuesday evening near Wilmington's Hedgeville section, police said.
Officers were called to the 200 block of Maryland Ave. just before 6 p.m. after receiving a call about the shooting. They found a 21-year-old shot in his left torso.
Paramedics took the man to the hospital, where he was listed as "stable."
According to court documents, the shooting occurred near an apartment building. A witness told police they heard "a loud pop, like a gunshot inside of the apartment."
Detectives found a single shell casing outside the apartment building.
Another witness who saw the shooting told police that Brennan Velez was the shooter, the documents say. They later picked him out of a lineup.
About an hour after the shooting, police were called to a home in the 800 block of W. 10th St. for a shots-fired complaint. When they got to the home, they found Velez, who allowed them to come into his apartment, according to court documents.
Inside, police found a handgun and a shell casing that matched the one found outside the Maryland Avenue building, court documents say. Officers arrested Velez at his home.
In addition to attempted murder, Velez was arrested on two firearms charges. He was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court and taken to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $150,100 cash bail.
