Dover sees record number of fatal shootings in 2020 with Christmas morning homicide
Fatal shootings in Dover reached a record high this year when a man was killed early Christmas morning.
The man, whose name and age have not yet been released, died at Kent General Hospital after being taken there by private vehicle. Police were called to the hospital just before 2:15 a.m.
Detectives believe the man was shot near Town Pointe Apartments. Police have not said where on his body he was hit.
The man's death pushes Dover into record territory, both for its total number of homicides and its number of fatal shootings.
Nine people have been killed so far this year, eight by gunfire. The last time the city approached this many people killed was 2015, which saw seven homicides.
All seven of those people died by gunfire.
DOVER'S LAST RECORD: City hits grisly high with latest homicide
Dover is not unique in reaching record highs this year — earlier this month, the state recorded the most shootings in recent memory, according to Delaware Online/The News Journal's shooting database.
So far in 2020, 312 people have been shot, 69 fatally, across Delaware. The first two shootings of the year occurred in Dover.
