Delaware restaurants struggling with takeout-only

It wasn’t long ago that Charles Boyer had multiple chefs cooking at his establishment, The Boulevard Live Entertainment Restaurant.

On weekends, he’d usually have all 15 of his employees (including chefs) working at his Dover restaurant.

Unfortunately, things haven’t been that way at The Boulevard for two weeks, since Gov. John Carney banned dining in at restaurants, due to the coronavirus.

Since then, only two people have been working at The Boulevard: Boyer (who’s been cooking the food himself) and his general manager (who’s been taking the orders).

March 26 was the first day Boyer reopened his restaurant for takeout orders since the ban. He’s offering a condensed version of his menu that includes fish, meatball subs and shrimp.

Boyer said it took him over a week to reopen because he thought the ban was going to end sooner, plus he needed to figure out a staffing plan for how they were going to accommodate takeout.

Business at his restaurant has been extremely slow, and he believes it’s because the community is holding on to their money during these uncertain times, he said.

“I think everyone thought this was going to be a quick thing like the H1N1 or SARS. We weren’t really affected by those that much,” Boyer said. “But I think people are scared now. There’s a realization that this thing is real.”

Touchdown Restaurant

Touchdown Restaurant manager Ashley Figueroa said things have been slower than usual there, too. At the same time, she said there’s also been generous support.

“The community has been a big help in supporting us, between Facebook, word of mouth and everything,” Figueroa said. “A lot of people have been sharing what we’ve been posting and a lot of people have been calling and sending their friends here. I feel like I’ve seen a lot of new customers as well.”

Green Stinger

Paul Casarotto is the owner of both Green Stinger locations in Dover and Smyrna.

Casarotto said he’s had to reduce staffing and was forced to close the Smyrna location indefinitely, because he wasn’t getting enough orders to justify keeping it open.

While things are better at his Dover location, he said it’s not the same like it was before the virus outbreak. Financially, the Green Stinger owner said they’re still hanging on.

“We’re gonna be okay. We should be okay for another month or two,” Casarotto said. “If it goes beyond that, it’s going to be hurting [us].”

Fraizer's Restaurant

Fraizer’s Restaurant general manager Jeff Mullen said their establishment is down to a skeleton crew and they reopened last week. Mullen said receiving orders has been a struggle.

“We have a Facebook and we’ve been blasting it on there. But not everyone reads our Facebook, so not everyone knows we’re reopen for takeout,” Mullen said.

His message to the community is to support small businesses, if you can.

“Me and my kids have actively supported local. We’ve ordered from quite a few places,” he said. “When I’ve gone out, I’ve shopped at Produce Junction. We try to consciously support local, so that I’m not being a hypocrite. But obviously if you need something from one of the big box stores, we get it.”

Boulevard owner Boyer said if orders don’t pick up this week, he’s going to have to close his restaurant until the ban is lifted.

In order to offset his loses, Boyer said he’s “going to be taking advantage of some of the loans that are being offered to us.”

Although it’s a possibility he might have to close his restaurant indefinitely, Boyer said he’s proud to have made it this far.

“It’s been a good ride,” he said. “I still feel very fortunate to be where I am with this business and be able to survive for over two years.

“When you open up something there’s always growing pains; and more so than anything else, it’s about learning as you grow, to know what not to do once you hit that plateau of success.”
