Alan L. Gottfried, injured March 4, died March 7

A Dover man, seriously injured in an early March traffic crash, has died.

Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said 72-year-old Alan L. Gottfried died March 7 at the Christiana Hospital.

Gottfried was injured at about 9:15 p.m. March 4 while driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta southbound on South Dupont Highway.

At the same time, the driver of a 2001 Jeep Wrangler turning south failed to remain stopped at a flashing red light. The Jeep went into the southbound lane, directly into the oncoming Volkswagen.

Gottfried, who was wearing a seatbelt, first was taken to Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus and later transferred to Christiana.

The 16-year-old driver of the Jeep Wrangler also was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

The incident continues to be investigated by the DSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit, Jaffe said, and the CRU will be working with the state attorney general's office in reference to any appropriate charges.
