Charles Shockley was riding his bike with his dog
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred last week in Bridgeville.
The preliminary investigation has determined that the incident occurred around 5:17 p.m. on Monday, December 3, as a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, being operated by a 29-year-old Seaford male, was southbound on Conrail Road just south of Cannon Road. A 16-year-old Bridgeville male, Charles Shockley, was riding his bicycle in the roadway as he walked a dog secured to the handlebars.
The driver failed to see the bicyclist in the roadway and struck it from the rear. Shockley was thrown from the bike. The driver of the Cherokee was uninjured and stopped his vehicle and attempted to perform CPR.
Shockley was initially transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with serious injuries before being flown to Christiana Hospital for more extensive treatment. He was wearing dark clothing with no light and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The dog he was walking was uninjured and returned home shortly after the collision.
Shockley succumbed to his injuries at Christiana Hospital on Thursday, December 6.
Alcohol was not a contributing factor in this accident.
