Handbell ensemble seeking new members
The Capital Ringers are moving their home base. Beginning December 15, the largest handbell ensemble on Delmarva will rehearse at Conley’s United Methodist Church, in the Angola area of Lewes.
“It’s become clear that our fan base is in Sussex,” said artistic director Linda Simms, of Dover. “And our ringers are mostly from that area, so it will be helpful for them.”
Simms, who has a background in music education, founded the group in 2004.
“My mission is to demonstrate the diversity of the bells,” she said. “They’re not just for Christmas.”
The Capital Ringers has 16 members and a percussionist. They will occasionally incorporate other instruments. They play a diverse selection of pop music, show tunes, patriotic songs and more. They’re touring Delmarva right now with their Christmas show, “Celebrate the Season,” and will hit the road again in the springtime with “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.”
The Capital Ringers will hold an orientation session at Conley’s Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, for anyone interested in becoming involved. Experienced ringers and beginners alike are welcome, but it’s not just ringers they need. The group requires people to work on set design, lighting, multimedia and grant writing.
