State police: 29-year-old Wilmington man, Ricardo Lismore, killed. Early morning traffic delays resulted.
UPDATE: On Dec. 1, the state police identified the dead man as Ricardo Lismore, 29, of Wilmington.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a tractor trailer and car at 1:24 a.m., Friday.
The crash was on Route 1 northbound, just south of U.S. 40.
A 2017 Kia Niro operated by a 29 year old Wilmington man was southbound in the northbound lanes of travel, in the area of the U.S. 40 interchange.
A 2010 Kenworth tractor trailer, operated by a 34 year old Harrington man was traveling northbound in the left lane, south of the U.S. 40 interchange. The Kia collided head on with the Kenworth, despite the efforts of the tractor trailer driver, to brake and avoid the collision.
After impact, the rear of the Kia lifted in to the air and came to a rest on top of the guardrail separating the SR 1 north and southbound lanes. The Kenworth stopped in the left lane at the point of the collision.
The driver of the Kia who was not seat belted, was ejected from the vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment on his behalf is undetermined. Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the tractor trailer was seat belted and was not injured. Impairment on his behalf is not a factor.
SR 1 northbound was closed for 6 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared. The southbound lanes were closed for 4 hours.
