Bayhealth announced that its laboratory and pathology services were awarded full accreditation by the College of American Pathologists.
This accreditation included the lab and pathology services at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus; Bayhealth Milford Memorial; and Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna.
The goal of the CAP program is to improve patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education and rigorous standards. This accreditation is considered the gold standard for laboratories. The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which began in the early 1960s, as being equal to or more rigorous than the government’s own inspection program.
With this achievement, Bayhealth joined about 83 percent of the top academic medical centers and large hospitals. Through the accreditation process, inspectors examined the lab and pathology records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examined staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.
