Milford police arrested an Ellendale man Tuesday after he appeared to be under the influence of drugs following a collision.
Department spokesman Sgt. Robert Masten identified the suspect as Juan J. Shirey, 24.
The single-vehicle crash took place at 1:20 p.m. Sept. 4 when Shirey’s vehicle hit a pole. Shirey’s condition led officers to think he was showing signs of a drug overdose. Shirey was taken to Bayhealth Hospital’s Milford campus where it was learned he was carrying 21 bags of heroin.
He was taken into custody after being treated and is charged with possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, driving while suspended, driving a vehicle under the influence of drugs, failure to have required insurance, and inattentive driving.
He later was released from custody on a $3,550 unsecured bond.
