D. Scott Gines, Delaware State University’s new athletic director, was welcomed to membership in Dover Capital City Rotary Club by President Chris Smith at its Aug. 2 meeting at Maple Dale Country Club.

Gines began his career in college athletics in 1983 as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Virginia, and in 1987 became one of the nation’s youngest Division I head coaches. In 2000, Gines concluded a 17-year Division I coaching career with 31 professional baseball selections, four Major Leaguers, nine Academic All-American awards and departed from Radford University and the Virginia Military Institute as their all-time wins leader at that time. On 10 occasions, his former players and assistant coaches led NCAA Division I baseball programs as head coaches.

A 1983 VMI distinguished graduate and military scholar, Gines holds a Master of Education from the University of Virginia and an Doctor of Education in leadership from the University of St. Thomas.
