Former Dover airman sentenced for rape

A former airman stationed at Dover Air Force Base has been sentenced to a year in prison for raping a 14-year-old runaway.

Zepplin Ray Taylor-McGinness, 22, on July 2 pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree rape and a single count of endangering the welfare of a child during a trial in Kent County Superior Court. He initially was charged with four counts of second-degree rape.

Taylor-McGinness was arrested Feb. 5 at his home in the Dover Country Club Apartments, according to a press release at the time from the Dover Police Department.

Police spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said then the guardian of a 14-year-old runaway told police the girl was staying at the apartment complex with an unknown person.

The Delmar girl was returned to the guardian.

A joint investigation between Dover police and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations showed the former airman 1st class had engaged in sexual acts on several occasions with the girl.

Taylor-McGinness will serve his sentence at the Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, where he has been held since his arrest.

Robber vandalizes liquor store, escapes with register

Dover police are looking for the man who robbed a local liquor store.

Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said the incident took place at 11:45 p.m., Friday, July 6, at D&D Liquors, at 1107 S. Dupont Highway, just before the store closed for the night.

The man broke several store displays, then took the cash register, running away with the machine and its contents.

The only description of the suspect is that he was wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and white gloves.

Harrington man killed in Milton-area crash

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on State Route 1 in the area of Truitt Road, near Milton.

Division spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffee has identified the driver as 66-year-old Robert C. Campbell of Harrington.

The crash was reported at about 5:17 a.m. Saturday, July 7 at when a passing driver noticed a vehicle off the roadway and in a field.

So far, police know Campbell’s 2001 Volvo station wagon was traveling toward the north and passed the intersection with Truitt Road. It then ran off the road, hit a signpost, and collided with a tree standing in an open field. The car came to rest a short distance from the tree, Jaffe said.

Campbell, who was the only person in the car, was not wearing a seatbelt, she added.

It is not yet known if Campbell was driving impaired, Jaffe said.
