Bernice M. Edwards, executive director of the First State Community Action Agency, recently addressed the Dover Colonial Rotary Club.

The object of her organization is for “People Helping People Build Community” as their slogan indicates. Edwards made it clear that this is a “hands-up and not a handout group,” a point that she emphasized during her presentation.

Edwards educated those present about the programs it conducts primarily in Kent and Sussex counties. This organization, founded in 1965, is one of the First State’s leading anti-poverty human service organizations, the aim of which is to help people to help themselves for a better life.

The list of programs included the Youth Culinary Training for ninth- through 12th-grade students, senior companion and peer support.

Also included would be Adult Culinary Arts Training, Summer Cooling Assistance aimed at the elderly or persons with disabilities and Promoting Safe and Stable Families program, in which families join with professional counselors to develop customized solutions for family stability.

Edwards also announced the annual mini golf tournament fundraiser will be held May 22 at Jungle Jim’s, 36944 Country Club Road, Rehoboth Beach.
