The robber escaped without taking any money
A knife-carrying would-be robber escaped only with a stolen cell phone following an attempted robbery Monday night.
Dover Police Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said the incident took place at about 8:57 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23 at the Dollar Tree store at 261 N. Dupont Highway.
The clerk said the man came in and she told him the store would be closing at 9 p.m. Two other men came in, talked with the first man and then left.
At about 9:04, the clerk found the man in an aisle and told him the business was closed. The man pulled the knife and demanded money as he walked toward her while she went to the cash registers. The suspect grabbed the clerk by the shirt after she refused to hand over any cash, Hoffman said.
The woman lost her cell phone as she fell to the floor, but the would-be robber picked it up and demanded to be let out. He then ran away.
The clerk suffered some minor scrapes around her neck when the suspect grabbed her shirt, but she declined treatment.
The suspect is a black man who wore a black hat, sunglasses, black jacket, red plaid shirt, dark pants and black or brown boots.
It is not known if the men he talked to were involved in the robbery attempt, Hoffman said.
