Some fun First State events to dive into this weekend

1. Tales of suspense will fill the hearts and minds of folks looking for an early Halloween thrill.

“A Terrifyingly Good Time: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe” will feature haunting readings from the Master of the Macabre, performed by Jim Hawkins.

The show isn’t recommended for children younger than age 10.

The venue was built just 20 years after Poe’s death. The ambiance of the building creates a perfect setting for Poe’s eerie tales.

“A Terrifyingly Good Time” will scare up some fun at the Smyrna Opera House, 7 W. South State St., Smyrna at 7:30 p.m., Saturday. COST $10 general admission; $8 members, senior citizens, and military; $5 for children under age 12. INFO or 653-4236.

2. The Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddlers’ Festival is a three-day weekend affair. But Saturday’s costume parade is certainly the main attraction.

The Woodland String Band mummers will march in the parade with thousands of nifty, costumed revelers, bands, decorated cars and more.

The parade, presented by Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, will feature trophies for Top 25 Walking, Top 10 Rolling/Motorized and Judge’s Favorite Bands.

Registration for the costume parade starts at 9 a.m. at the Grub Grocery parking lot at 305 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach. The costume parade begins at 11 a.m. and will circle around Rehoboth Avenue. COST Free. INFO or 227-2233.

3. Vampires have a heart too. And that’s the premise of the silly spoof “Dracula in Love.”

Two young women seeking refuge become unexpected guests at Dracula’s Halloween party.

Igor the hunchback and Dracula both seem friendly. But chills and laughter escalate as monstrous guests arrive.

Will Dracula’s affection for one of the girls keep her safe, or is she destined to be bitten and lead a vampire’s life of darkness?

“Dracula in Love,” by Reedy Point Players, will run at the Delaware City Community Center, 250 Fifth Street, Delaware City at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday. COST $12 adult; $10 senior, student and active military; $5 ages 10 or younger. INFO or 468-7772.
