A fire caused severe damage to a two-story home in Laurel in the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 6.

The blaze occurred in the 5000 block of Woodland Ferry Road and was reported around 4 a.m. Firefighters arrived on scene to find fire showing from the structure, which was occupied by a mother and two small children. The mother was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for minor injuries received while escaping the fire, while the children were unharmed. The fire was placed under control at about 5:30 a.m., and units remained on scene until about 9:15 a.m. It has not yet been determined if the house was equipped with working smoke detectors.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s investigation determined the fire was caused by a malfunction in the wood stove chimney system of the residence. Damage to the structure was estimated at $250,000.
