1871 Friends of the brothers Saulsbury, Eli, Willard, and Gove, gathered in Dover to determine who was going to succeed Willard as U.S. Senator. Eli was eventually chosen over his brother Gove.


1920 At midnight the 18th Amendment, prohibition, went into effect. The transport, manufacture, and sale of liquor within the United States was now prohibited.

1930 Delaware officials in Wilmington stated that females who refused to disclose their age would not be issued a driver's license.

1945 Authorities notified Delaware smokers that cigarettes would soon be rationed at 15 per day.
