Delaware State Police are seeking information about a motorcycle crash in which a Dover man died Wednesday east of Smyrna.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m., said Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.

A 54-year-old Dover man was driving a 2012 Triumph motorcycle east on Smyrna-Leipsic Road, west of Big Oak Road. As he rounded a moderate left curve, he ran off the south side of the road and struck a ditch before hitting a vinyl fence, Fournier said.

The man was thrown from the motorcycle upon impact and was pronounced dead at the scene, Fournier said. Investigators have not determined if he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

His name is being withheld until his family is notified, Fournier said.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation and is seeking information on a white mid-sized passenger car that may have been in the area prior to the crash.

Police are asking anyone with information about this crash or the white vehicle to call Sgt. Groce at 302-698-8518. Information may also be provided to Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.”

Smyrna-Leipsic Road was closed for about three-and-a-half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared, Fournier said.
