The Lake Forest School District announced Sara P. Bushey was named Teacher of the Year for the 2018-19 school year.

Bushey is a third-grade teacher at Lake Forest North Elementary School in Felton. Her selection was announced at the Lake Forest 48th annual Recognition Ceremony on May

17.

Bushey has 14 years of teaching experience, nine of them in the Lake Forest School District. She started teaching first grade in the Capital School District before coming to Lake Forest North to teach third grade in 2009.

Bushey holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Wesley College and a master’s degree in teaching and learning from Wilmington University. She is involved as a teacher leader at Lake Forest North, serving as the grade level chairperson for third grade and the School Improvement Team. Bushey also serves in numerous leadership capacities at the district level by being a member of the Curriculum Planning Team, facilitating professional development for Professional Learning Communities and Number Talks teaching strategies and coaching teachers in elementary curriculum. She also has represented Lake Forest at the state level as a member of the Elementary Math Teacher Leader project through the University of Delaware, the Delaware Dream Team project through LearnZillion and in helping to create statewide Smarter Balanced Digital Library resources for teachers.

Bushey is also involved in her community by volunteering for Special Olympics, Delaware Hospice and Harrington Parks and Recreation. She plans for and teaches at vacation Bible school, is a member of the educational committee and membership committee and assists with the weekly children’s message for Prospect United Methodist Church in Harrington.

Bushey was one of six school-level Teachers of the Year who competed in a selection process that included a written portfolio, teacher interview and classroom observation. The District Teacher of the Year was selected by a committee of 10 members representing all schools.

Along with Bushey, school Teachers of the Year are Amy Costlow, Lake Forest High School; Garret Hobbs, W.T. Chipman Middle School; Debbie Emery, Lake Forest Central Elementary School; Lina Miller, Lake Forest South Elementary School; and Valerie Burd, Lake Forest East Elementary School.

Bushey will now represent the Lake Forest School District in the Delaware Teacher of the Year selection process. The State Teacher of the Year will be announced in October.
