A bicyclist was killed Monday evening after he was hit by a vehicle west of Dover.
The crash took place at about 5:57 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12 on Hazlettville Road, Dover Police Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.
The department’s investigation shows the cyclist, identified as Bernard Etapale, 63, was riding westward in the bicycle lane approaching Wyoming Mill Road, Hoffman said.
At the same time, a Jeep Compass also was being driven westbound on Hazlettville Road, he added.
As the Jeep came up on Etapale, he turned out of the bike lane and into the travel lane directly into the Jeep’s path, Hoffman said. The Jeep hit the bike, throwing Etapale off and onto the Jeep’s windshield.
Bystanders and arriving Dover police officers rendered first aid and CPR to Etapale, who was taken to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. He then was flown to Christiana Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead as a result of head trauma.
Etapale was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, Hoffman said.
The driver of the Jeep stopped at the scene after the crash and police are not expected to file charges against him, Hoffman said.
