Accident happened Friday afternoon on Vandyke Greenspring Road

The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving a 10-wheel flatbed truck which struck a moving train north of Clayton on Friday.

The accident happened at about 2:09 p.m., as Justin M. Sherwood, 34, of Magnolia, was driving a 2014 Freightliner flatbed truck east on Vandyke Greenspring Road approaching the railroad tracks.

A Norfolk-Southern train with two engines and 36 cars was traveling south approaching Vandyke Greenspring Road.

Sherwood stopped his truck at the railroad crossing signal, but while he was stopped his foot slipped off the brake pedal and hit the gas pedal, police said. His truck moved forward and was struck by the first engine of the train.

The impact caused the truck to be pushed back about three feet. The train stopped on the railroad tracks approximately a quarter mile south of the collision with no derailment.

Sherwood was properly restrained and uninjured. None of the personnel on the train were injured in the collision.

Sherwood was ticketed for inattentive driving, police said.

Vandyke Greenspring Road was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and the train was inspected.
