This week signals the end of the high school volleyball regular season for both the Caesar Rodney Riders and Dover Senators. Both teams will play their final three regular season contests this week, including an important conference match up against one another on Thursday afternoon at Caesar Rodney High School.
The Lady Riders stand at 10-2, winners of nine of their last 10 match ups. Meanwhile, under first-year head coach Jen Wilson, the Lady Senators entered this week with a respectable 7-5 record.
With the Riders all but assured a spot in the post season, Dover has some work to do especially in the crowded Henlopen Conference. Even with an above .500 record, the Lady Senators still sit behind five others teams within the conference including Caesar Rodney, Delmar, Cape Henlopen, Polytech and conference leader Smyrna. Dover’s season-finale against CR on Thursday could be a make-or-break game for the team if they’re able to surpass Delmarva Christian and Delmar earlier this week.
As for the Lady Riders, this contest could be equally important when it comes to seeding.
“The goal this week is to build on our success and to feel confident going into the first round of the state tournament,” said Caesar Rodney Head Coach Zach Taylor. “We play a couple of strong teams in our conference in Cape and Dover, and have a great challenge on Friday against Concord. If we play well against these teams, it will solidify our place in the tournament and give us the belief that we can compete with anyone.”
For Dover, it’s a chance to potentially play spoiler against some teams while also improving their own standings along the way. With an outside chance at making the post season you can bet the Lady Senators will come to play this week, especially against a rival like CR. Regardless of the outcome, one can be sure there will be many more exciting battles to come between these two teams as neither program seems to be fading.
