A would-be thief broke through the roof of a local golf club over the weekend, but was chased off empty handed when the alarm system went off.

The break-in took place at about 4:17 a.m. at the Maple Dale Country Club at 180 Maple Dale Road, said Dover Police Department spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman.

The burglar got inside the men’s locker room after cutting through the roof, then tried to force entry into the pro shop, but was unsuccessful, Hoffman said. The suspect damaged a door and door frame before escaping the way he came when multiple alarms went off.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Dover Police at 736-7111.
