Sylvia S. Bates, 74, Dublin, Ind., died Tuesday evening, July 27, 2010.

Sylvia S. Bates, 74, died Tuesday evening, July 27, 2010, at her home in Dublin, Ind.

A daughter of the late Richard and Viola (Webb) Smith, Mrs. Bates was born in Beattyville, Ky., on May 1, 1936.

Mrs. Bates was the valedictorian of her high school class of 1955 in Loveland, Ohio. She moved from Hamilton, Ohio, to the Dublin, Ind., community in 1961. She was an active member of the Dublin Gospel Mission Church where she enjoyed working with the youth group and vacation bible school program. She was also a member of the Do Gooders Club, volunteered at the Dublin Community Club and provided home care for the elderly.

Mrs. Bates lived her life by the creed, “You make a living by what you get, You make a life by what you give.”

Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her husband James L. Bates on Aug. 16, 2001. They were married in Liberty, Ind. on May 12, 1956.

She is survived by three children, Tonda Mears and her husband John of Felton, Dennis J. Bates and his wife Michelle of New Castle, and Mark Bates and his wife Lisa of Dublin; 12 grandchildren, Logan Mears, Avery Mears and his wife Kelsey, Broden Mears, Eric Bates and his wife Beth, Ryan Bates and his wife Jessica, Carly Holliday, and Steven, Mitchell, Ashley, Jessica, Zach and Ben-Ben Bates; four great-grandchildren, Brayden Mears and Brayden, Addison and Carter Bates.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at the Flannery Cemetery, Jackson County, McKee, Ky.
