Russell K. Legates, 84, of Harrington, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at home.
Born in Milford, he was the son of the late Harry E. Legates and Bertha Mae Thompson Legates.
Mr. Legates was the valedictorian of the Harrington High School class of 1942, and then attended the University of Delaware.
He was a senior clerk at the Harrington post office, retiring in 1983 after 30 years of service.
Mr. Legates enjoyed traveling and had traveled extensively throughout all 50 states, many parts of Canada and Mexico, as well as countries in Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East. He also was interested in genealogy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. James Edward Legates; and two sisters, Virginia M. Dean and Delema Shockley.
Mr. Legates is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanette Legates of Harrington; a son, Dr. David R. Legates of Middletown; his nieces and nephews, Rodney Legates of Franklinton, N.C.; Glenn Legates of Creedmoor, N.C.; Rev. Bruce LeGates of Oxford, N.C.; and Barbara Annis of Franklinton.
Interment was in the Hollywood Cemetery, east of Harrington.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Legates’ name may be made to the Prospect Methodist Church or to the Harrington Food Pantry, c/o the Lake Forest Church Association.
