John Finney Downham, 79, of Brandywine Hundred, formerly of Wyoming, died Sunday, July 27, 2008.
A memorial service for John Finney Downham, 79, of Brandywine Hundred, formerly of Wyoming, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Fairfax. Mr. Downham died Sunday, July 27, 2008, at the Christiana Hospital, Newark.
Mr. Downham was born in Northampton County, Va., but grew up in Wyoming, where he graduated from Caesar Rodney High School.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Delaware and later served as an artillery officer during the Korean War.
In 1953, Mr. Downham was employed in the Textile Fibers Department sales office of the Du Pont Company in Providence, R.I. He later joined Merrill Lynch & Company as an account executive, working in New York City and Allentown, Pa.
He returned to Delaware in 1961 to accept an investment position with the Pension Fund Section of the Du Pont Company, moving in 1965 to Delaware Trust, now part of Wachovia Bank. He retired in 1990 as investment division manager and chairman of the Trust Investment Committee after 27 years with the bank’s trust department.
Mr. Downham’s community interests over the years included Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Peninsula United Methodist Homes, University of Delaware Alumni Association, Council of Civic Organizations of Brandywine Hundred, Sons of the American Revolution and the University and Whist Club.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katharine Leggett Downham; two sons and their wives, John Finney Jr. and Marguerite Downham of Westmont, N.J., and Thomas West and Donna Downham of San Francisco, Calif.,; two grandsons, David and Matthew.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
