The NHL’s Winter Classic is coming to Boston next week, and fans are stocking up on Reebok apparel that commemorates the event.
The Boston Bruins will face off against the Philadelphia Flyers on New Year’s Day at Fenway Park. It’s the third year of the fledgling NHL tradition in which two teams play a regular season game outdoors.
Renewed interest in hockey is paying off for the Canton-based athletic goods company, said Simon Drouin, Reebok’s NHL sales manager.
“No one works on Jan. 1 and everybody channel surfs, so many casual fans are going to be watching this game,” Drouin said.
Reebok recently rolled out lines of jerseys, T-shirts and hats with Winter Classic themes. Drouin said sales of the product line are running nearly 20 percent higher than last year, when the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field.
T-shirts with Bruins’ left wing Milan Lucic’s name and number are the top-selling item. Another T-shirt incorporates an image of the scoreboard at Fenway Park. Player jerseys bear a Winter Classic emblem and were designed with retro-inspired colors and team logos to distinguish them from regular jerseys.
Sales of Winter Classic gear outsell those of the Stanley Cup championship merchandise, Drouin said.
Reebok supplies the NHL’s jerseys and is the league’s licensee for fan gear.
