March sucks. Its the nadir of the winter. Hunting seasons have ended and the weather is too cool for pleasure fishing. Even the white perch haven't begun their run in earnest yet and cabin fever sets in. What's there to do.
Fortunately for us, both the outdoor show circuit and the non-profit conservation groups try to fill that void. Finding an outdoor show seems to be sporadic and requires some traveling but our own local groups usually use this month to host their annual dinner banquets.
The Delmarva Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is hosting it's 21st Annual Dinner and Auction on March 10 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover. Doors open at 4 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5:30.
Most of you know that RMEF fetes are top shelf offering both good food along with quality firearms and hunts as part of their auctions and raffles. This one will be no different and their offerings are certainly those that dreams are made of. There is an African safari, a black bear hunt for two in British Columbia, an elk hunt in Coloratdo and a Missouri deer hunt leading local offerings of whitetail hunts and fishing expeditions. Other raffles and auctions will include exquisite gifts for all members of the family which will include jewelry and original pieces of artwork.
Since no tickets will be available at the door, you must call ahead for reservations. Tickets are $100 for couples and $75 for singles with one membership to the RMEF included in each selection. Tickets usually go quickly so if you want to join in, you need to contact Walter Griffitts (302 540-7669) or Ken Starke (302 697-3621)
