FOOTBALL

All-state, conference teams announced
The 2009 All-State Football and All-Conference Football teams for the 2009 season, sponsored by the state’s head coaches, and based on votes by coaches and the media, has been announced.

Local players that made the all-state team included:

First team
: Malcolm Yowk, Caesar Rodney, running back; Kevin Morris, Caesar Rodney, offensive tackle; and Josh Ferris, Caesar Rodney, defensive end.

Second team
: Yowk, return specialist.

Third team
: Daquan Harris, Caesar Rodney, fullback; Dominic Cruz, Caesar Rodney, defensive tackle; and Alvin Hudson, Lake Forest, linebacker.

Local players that made the Henlopen North All-Conference Team included:

First team
: Yowk, running back; Morris, offensive tackle; Ferris, defensive end; Trip Thurman, Dover, defensive end; Cruz, defensive tackle; Miles Hunter, Caesar Rodney, linebacker; Matt Watson, Dover, defensive back; and DJ Aspinwall, Dover, punter.

Second team
: Harris, fullback; Pierre Foreman, Dover, running back; Eric Sumlin, Dover, wide receiver; Thurman, offensive tackle; Phil Lewis, Caesar Rodney, defensive end; Brandon Arrington, Dover, linebacker; and Jordan Henry, Caesar Rodney, defensive back.

Honorable mention
: Travis Webb, Caesar Rodney; and Kamal Abrams, Dover.

Local players that made the Henlopen South All-Conference Team included:

BASEBALL

DHS to host winter skills clinic for ages 6 to 12
The Dover High Senators baseball team will host its annual baseball skills clinic on Sundays in February in the Dover High gym, 1 Patrick Lynn Drive, Dover.

The program will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 6 to 9 and 10:30 a.m. to noon for ages 10 to 12 Sundays, Feb. 7, 14 and 21.

Players will receive instruction in hitting, fielding and base running.

The cost of registration is $60 in advance, $65 for walk-ins.

FITNESS

Run/walk to benefit victims of asthma
The American Lung Association in Delaware will host the Breath for Life: Walk/Run for Asthma at 11 a.m., 10 a.m. registration, Saturday, Jan. 9, at Silver Lake Park, Dover.

The registration fee is $12 due before Friday, Jan. 8, or $15 after, with all proceeds benefiting the ALADE. Participants will receive a T-shirt and snacks.

5K
Wellness walk/run set for New Year’s Day
The first-ever 5K Walk/Run to benefit The Wellness Community-Delaware is set for 10 a.m., 9 a.m. registration, Friday, Jan. 1, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 680 Bay Road, Dover.

The registration fee is $18 prior to the event, $20 the day of and free for Kiddie K children ages 10 and younger. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a post-race party will be held at BWW.

Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners, the top three male and female runners in 10-year age groups from 14 and young to 70 and older, and top three male and female walkers. All Kiddie K finishers will receive medals.

Red tribute balloons will line the pathway along the course and are available for $10 to honor a cancer survivor. To purchase a balloon, call Jan Shallcross at 734-0898 or email jshallcross@wellnessdelaware.org.
