The Dover High School football team’s offense was at it again Sept. 18, when for the second straight week the Senators were able to reach the 40-point mark in beating Glasgow High School, 40-7, on the road.
Pierre Foreman led the Senators by racking up 246 rushing yards, 49 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
“The line was opening big holes for me tonight and I just tried my hardest to hit them,” Foreman said following the game in which he had touchdown rushes of 73 and 30 yards.
The win was Dover’s (2-0, 0-0) first over Glasgow (0-2, 0-0) in more than three years, a stat that made the victory that much more special, Head Coach Carlton Brown said.
“I’m never satisfied, but I’m happy tonight because this is a team I haven’t beaten in three years,” Brown said.
The Senators’ coach said Foreman’s spectacular performance was something of a coming-out party for the 205-pound back.
“He ran very well and showed his versatility tonight,” Brown said. “That running game is something you have to have, and he proved he can cut and run around anyone.”
The Sens will start Henlopen Conference play in their next game when they face Indian River (0-2, 0-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday Sept. 25, at Dover High Stadium.
“They’re a very dangerous team,” Brown said. “They have a great core of guys, all centered around their quarterback, who is very talented and very athletic. Stopping him is the primary focus for our defense.”
The Dover defense was strong through most of the game against the Dragons this past week, with the defining moment of their performance a forced fumble on the goal line that prevented a touchdown.
Despite having an all-around strong game, Brown said there are aspects of his squad’s performance that need correcting.
The Senators took a number of unnecessary penalties in the second half of the game, something that did not hurt them but could if they fall into that trap in future games.
“We need to cut down on the penalties and be mistake free,” Brown said. “You can’t play the other team and play the refs. You have to just play your opponent.”
Another area of Dover’s on-field performance Brown felt needs correcting is how flat the team has come out in the second half of its first two games this year.
After taking big first-half leads, the team lost focus in the first two contests and allowed the opposition a chance to get back in the game.
“It’s hard to keep the kids focused and motivated in those situations,” Brown said. “We got out there and things started coming easy, but I told them they have to learn to get that killer instinct and finish things.”
With some tough games still ahead, Brown said the Sens needed to continue to build on what they’ve already done this year. He admitted, however, that his group has a ways to go.
“We’re still looking up at the Sussex Centrals and the Caesar Rodneys, because they’re where we want to be,” Brown said. “But I think we’re on the move there now.”
