Dover, Del. -

After losing two consecutive games for the first time this season, the Dover High School football team got back in the win column this past weekend, and now looks to win successive games for the first time since weeks one and two of this year.

The Senators (4-3, 2-1) won for the first time since their homecoming victory over Smyrna High School Oct. 2 when they beat Cape Henlopen, 56-35, Oct. 23 on the road.

Junior running back Pierre Foreman rushed for four touchdowns in the win, a promising sign for Dover. But more important than that, Head Coach Carlton Brown said, was that the team displayed a resiliency and confidence he hasn’t seen in weeks.

The Senators were down late in the first half by 15 points, but recognized the play Cape was beating them on, adjusted at halftime, and outscored the Vikings 36-6 in the second half to grab the win.

“The big thing was that the play we got beat on, it was the same play three different times,” Brown said. “Once we made that adjustment we were able to shut it down. And in the second half I finally got a chance to see something I saw from these guys earlier in the season.”

The coach added that if he knew what it was that was said or done this past week to inspire his team to return to early-season form, he’d do it again.

“If I could put my finger on it, I would try to tap on it the next three weeks,” Brown said. “You know what your team is capable of doing and I’m proud of the way they came together.”

Foreman said he wasn’t surprised he and his teammates responded the way they did Friday, as there was a general attitude change amongst the team leading up to the Cape game.

“For the past week we had pretty good practices,” he said. “Everybody was hyped up, everybody was having a good time, so I knew we were going to come out and be enthused and ready to play.”

The Senators will look to carry momentum into their next game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, versus Sussex Central High School (3-4, 0-4).

Brown said one game is not an indication that his boys are back to where they were early in the season, though he admitted that he sees them chasing the feeling they got from winning big this past week.

“I saw a group of kids that it felt good to see them happy again,” he said. “That smile on their face, that’s what it’s all about. You have to play this game and have fun playing it.

“But I’m the kind of person, I don’t go off the first sign of improvement, I have to see it twice. I’ll know by Friday night whether they have that back.”
