The Dover Senators boy’s basketball team defeated Caesar Rodney 63-55 Friday night in front of a sold out crowd at Dover High. Dover’s Zachary Walker led all scores with 24 points in the Senators win.

The two teams combined for 118 points Friday night, but you might not have envisioned that point total after the first quarter. Dover came out sluggish in the first quarter, scoring only six points, meanwhile, CR posted 10 points taking a 10-6 lead into the second quarter.

From the jump, the Riders were looking to spread the ball around. Five different players scored for Caesar Rodney in their 10 point first quarter.

In the second quarter Dover began to awaken from their first quarter offensive slumber. Zachary Walker started to make his presence felt underneath the boards, scoring nine points in the 2nd quarter.

CR’s continued their effort to spread the ball around. Eight Riders scored points in the first half, none of which had more than four.

However, Walker’s efforts, timely defense and costly Rider turnovers saw Dover jump ahead of CR 26-22 at half time.

In the second half, Dover continued to bound the boards with Walker and others. The Riders were able to hang around due to the strong play of Chris and Colin Moore.

The third quarter saw both teams trading shots, as the game had entered the seesaw stage. Dover was able to climb out to a seven-point lead to end the third quarter, leading 45-38.

The fourth and final quarter was filled with the kind of drama we’ve come to expect from this rivalry.

Early on in the quarter it was clear that Zachary Walker had taken over the game. Walker was fouled after making field goals, and several times he was able to execute the three-point play successfully. One of those times came on a two-handed slam-dunk that had the crowd jumping out of their seats.

The Riders continued to shoot themselves in the foot, whether it was traveling, palming, or unforced turnovers, nothing was going their way. However, Colin Moore who had left the game earlier with an apparent shoulder injury did he best “superman” impression in the fourth quarter.

With CR trailing 54-46, Moore was able to score six points in two possessions, coming by way of a field goal and an and-one, then Moore hit a three-ball from the far corner. Moore’s heroics cut the Dover lead down to 54-52.

Unfortunately for Moore he was called for traveling and a palming violation on the next two CR possessions. With just under two minutes remaining in the game, perhaps he was trying to do too much.

With time winding down, the Riders offense was bogged down by the Senators defense. Caesar Rodney was forced to start fouling Dover to stop the clock, and two free throws by Lewis Foreman of Dover sealed the deal for the Senators.

The loss puts the Riders at 1-1 for the season, they’ll take on Polytech on Tuesday night.

The win puts the Senators at 2-0, they’ll be in action Tuesday night as well taking on Glasgow.

The two teams will meet again on February 7th
