The No. 2 Appoquinimink Jaguars advanced to the Division I DIAA Boys Soccer State Championship Game, defeating No. 3 Caesar Rodney, 5-2, Wednesday night in the semifinals at Smyrna High.

Appo and CR traded goals in a close first half, but the Jaguars pulled away in the second half, moving on to the state title game.

An own-goal put the Riders ahead early Wednesday night, but as they would the entire first half, the Jaguars answered quickly. Derek Fisher found the back of the net just two minutes later to tie things up at 1-1.

The Riders responded when Kyle Wentling headed in a corner kick to give CR the lead at 2-1.

Matt Meadows countered for Appo with a header of his own just a minute later to knot things up at 2-2.

Later in the half, Alex Suarez gave the Jags their first lead of the game 3-2.

Appo added two more in the second half, including Meadows’ second of the game to put the game on ice.

STATE TITLE GAME SATURDAY

The Jaguars advance to the state title game Saturday at Smyrna High at 5 p.m. against No. 1 Salesianum who advanced Wednesday night after defeating No. 5 Cape Henlopen 8-1.

Appo and Salesianum met just a month ago in regular season play, a 2-0 win for Sallies. The game was scoreless in the opening half before Salesianum took the lead early in the second half on an own-goal before adding an insurance marker later.

The Jags were one of only four teams to keep Salesianum to two goals or less during the season; Polytech was the only other in-state school to do so.
