Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech punched their tickets to the DIAA Division I Field Hockey State Championship Game, advancing after semifinal victories Tuesday night.
The No. 2 Cape Henlopen Lady Vikings advanced to the semifinals after a 7-0 opening round win over No. 7 St. Georges Tech. Tuesday night, Cape took down No. 3 Polytech, 4-0.
They jumped ahead of the Lady Panthers early, scoring three first half goals. Lindsay Monigle opened the scoring before two straight goals by Cameron Smith gave Cape Henlopen a 3-0 halftime advantage.
Alia Marshall added an insurance marker in the second half, giving the Lady Vikings 4-0 lead.
Polytech ended their season 10-5 overall, defeating No. 6 Appoquinimink 7-1 in the opening round to advance to the state semifinals.
Meanwhile, in the other semifinal contest, No. 8 Sussex Tech shutout No. 4 Dover 1-0 to advance to the state title game.
The Lady Ravens upset No. 1 Padua Academy by the same score in the opening round last week.
Kira Short gave Sussex Tech a 1-0 lead in the first half and it was all they would need to clinch their spot in the state championship. The rest of the way, goalie Grace Lee and the Lady Ravens’ defense shut down Dover’s offense, preserving the victory.
The Lady Senators went 9-4-2 overall this season and advanced to the semifinals after a 2-0 win over No. 5 Concord last week.
No. 8 Sussex Tech and No. 2 Cape Henlopen will battle for the state title this Saturday at University of Delaware Rullo Field.
