Dover native and 95th ranked women’s tennis player in the world, Madison Brengle, advanced to the third round at Wimbledon Wednesday after an upset win over a tournament favorite, Petra Kvitova.
The 27-year-old Brengle opened with a 6-3 first set victory before Kvitova evened things up after a 1-6 second set win before Brengle closed the door winning the third set, 6-2, taking down the two-time Wimbledon champion.
Brengle advanced to the second round on Monday, defeating Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands in two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to score her first singles win at Wimbledon.
Brengle moves on to the third round at Wimbledon taking on No. 21 Caroline Garcia of France.
Brengle and Garcia have matched up three times in the past, with Garcia winning two of the three. Garcia was victorious at Doha and at the 2012 Australian Open, both on hard courts. Brengle’s lone victor over Garcia came on clay at Stuttgart in 2015, a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.
Their last meeting came at Doha last year, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory by Garcia. Both of Garcia’s victories came on hard courts, Friday’s third round matchup will be the first time the two meet on a grass court.
The third round between Brengle and Garcia will be played Friday at noon eastern time on ESPN from the All England Club.
