The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating an incident in which a man and child were thrown from an all-terrain vehicle they were riding on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred in DuPont Manor, north of Dover, at about 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday. According to police, Jeremy T. Cook, 21, of Dover, and a 3-year-old male passenger were eastbound on Harriet Street, east of Wayne Drive, on a Yahama Grizzly four-wheeler when, after stopping, the ATV lunged forward. The jolt caused Cook and the child, who was seated in front of him, to fall backwards from the ATV and strike the ground.

Cook, who suffered severe head injuries, was taken to Kent General Hospital and admitted. According to police, Cook is in a coma. The 3-year-old was treated for minor injuries and released.

Neither Cook nor the child was wearing a helmet, a report said.
