Friends of the late Betty Emma Taylor Wootten, 86, of Dover, may call on the family at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where services will be held at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Wootten died following a long illness Monday, Jan. 25, 2010.

Born Nov. 17, 1923, on Poplar Grove Farm, Magnolia, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley Taylor and Bertha Mae Conner Taylor. She and her older sister, Hazel, were raised on the farm.

After graduating from high school, Mrs. Wootten moved to Wilmington, where she worked for the DuPont Company.

She met Fred, her husband of 47 years, on a blind date while still in high school.

Mrs. Wootten raised Dennis, Janet and Drew, their three children, with love, tolerance, and grace. She traveled fearlessly, moved without effort in many circles, mastered many arts, and touched countless lives.

She was a member of Wesley Church for more than a half-century, serving on the board of trustees and as a member of the choir. Betty was a member of the Dover Century Club and the Garden Club.

Mrs. Wootten was vivacious and intellectually curious, and had a passion for beauty and the arts. She was tough. And funny. She loved Seth, Conner, Adam and April, her grandchildren, fiercely, as well as all of her other family and friends.

She is missed terribly by all who knew her.

Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Wootten’s name may be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Letters of condolence may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
