Mr. Glass died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008.

Born June 14, 1938, in Wyoming, Mr. Glass was the son of the late Odell Solace Glass and Dorothy Virginia Glass.

Mr. Glass attended public schools in Kent County. He began a distinguished 22-year career by enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1956 and retiring in 1978. He later achieved the rank of captain in the Maryland Defense Force, a support agency of the Maryland National Guard. During his military career, he held numerous jobs including that of small aircraft and helicopter pilot.

He was especially proud of his meritorious service in the Republic of Vietnam, where he bravely served his country for more than 35 months. In 1979, he was voted one of Maryland's 10 Outstanding Vietnam Veterans. In addition to having received the U.S. Army's Meritorious Service Medal in 1978, he also received many superior performance awards and administrator citations.

Following Mr. Glass’ military retirement, he entered the civil service, and held management positions in the National Alliance of Business in Baltimore, Md., and in the Bureau of Policy Development. In 1982, he founded and served as executive director of Black Veterans of All Wars Inc., in Baltimore and in Dover. He also served as an advisor and service officer at the Maryland Regional Office of Veterans Administration, and numerous other posts involving veteran affairs.

He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, and his political enthusiasm led him into his most recent run for mayor of the city of Dover.

Mr. Glass and his wife were members of the Pentecostals of Dover Church.

He is survived by his wife, the former Martha Mickens, whom he married June 22, 2003; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Edwin Glass of Wyoming, James and Mae Glass of Dover, Odell Glass of Dothan, Ala., and Carlton and Janette Glass of Dover.

Interment will be in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park, west of Dover.

Arrangements are by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
