Friends of the late Donald J. Hickman Sr., 83, of Dover, may call on the family beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.
Mr. Hickman died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
Born June 22, 1926, in Bayard, he was the son of the late Ollie Hickman and Mattie Bishop Hickman.
Mr. Hickman retired after 25 years with the Delaware Department of Transportation, where he worked as a procurement specialist. He was at one time a member of the Roxanna Fire Company and once the mayor of Fenwick Island, as well as an auctioneer for Hickman’s Auction Service.
Mr. Hickman enjoyed farming, watching NASCAR, and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ollie Hickman Jr., William Kelly and Elisha Hickman; a sister, Maud Murray; and a granddaughter, Renee Timmons Smith.
Mr. Hickman is survived by his wife of 40 years, Irene Biddle Hickman of Dover; two daughters and their husbands, Brenda H. and Robert Delong of Milford and Kristi and Daniel Hamilton of Magnolia; and a son and daughter-in-law, Donald J. Jr. and Brenda Hickman of Georgetown.
He also is survived by two brothers, Jack Hickman of Bethany Beach and Delmus Hickman of Ocean View; two sisters, Violet Rickards of Frankford and Janis Burbage of Smith Island; six grandchildren, Brian Timmons, Karen Vautard, Lisa Reynolds, Donald Hickman III, Jason Hickman and Riley Hamilton; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in the Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery, near Frederica.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Hickman’s name may be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or the Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934.
