Elizabeth Humble Carter, 83, of Dover, died Saturday, June 20, 2009.

    Born in Monroe, La., she was the daughter of the late John R. Humble and Louise Littlepage Humble.

    Mrs. Carter was a 1942 graduate of Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1945 from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. She also attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Upon graduation, she married Charles B. Carter of Ruston.

    Moving more than 30 times as a result of transfers with DuPont Company, she managed to raise three children and taught mathematics in high schools in Seaford, Waynesboro, Va., and Chattanooga, Tenn. After retirement, the Carters enjoyed traveling throughout the world by ship.

    Mrs. Carter was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed crafts, playing bridge, and rooting for her favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves. In the last year of her life, she moved to Dover from Ashville, N.C., to be closer to her daughter.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John R. Carter, on Jan. 18, 2009.

    Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles B. Carter Sr., a resident of the northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe; her daughter, Beverly C. Williams of Dover; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles B. Jr. and Kay Carter of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Sean Strehle, Christopher Strehle, C.J. Carter and Kayse L. Carter; and two great-grandchildren, Cody Strehle and Riley Minner.

    Memorial services will be held July 16, at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Chapel Monroe.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Carter’s name may be made to the Delaware Hospice. 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
