OBITUARY: Donald L. Wheatley

Donald L. Wheatley, 83, of Smyrna, formerly of Dover, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital.

Born in Oct. 11, 1926, in Camden, he was the son of the late Frank D. Wheatley and Blanche V. Hastings Wheatley.

Mr. Wheatley was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and served aboard the USS Amsterdam.

In civilian life, he was employed with the Chrysler Corporation in Newark for 30 years, retiring as body shop superintendent in 1985.

An avid outdoorsman throughout his life, Mr. Wheatley looked forward to hunting, particularly goose and deer hunting, and saltwater fishing. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and cheering for his favorite team, the Philadelphia Phillies.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Patrick Wheatley; and three brothers, William Wheatley, Jerome Wheatley and Robert Wheatley.

Mr. Wheatley is survived by his wife of 25 years, F. Diane Doyle Wheatley; a daughter, Jo-Ellen Zarro-Houck and her husband, Frank, of Bloomfield, N.J.; a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan R. and Sarah Wheatley of Claymont; a sister, Ruth Walker of Middletown; a brother, James Wheatley of Wachapreague, Va.; and two grandsons, Aaron M. Appledorne and Nicholas Houck.

Services and interment were held privately.
