The Safeway Foundation has given Easter Seals Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore a  $23,000 grant that will help the nonprofit  expand its Early Intervention Program.

The grant will allow Easter Seals to hire a much needed speech therapist in Dover.

Now in its second year, the Safeway Foundation’s Empowerment Grants are awarded to Easter Seals affiliates across the country whose innovative programming makes a difference in the lives of people with disabilities, whether through autism services, employment support, inclusive child care, early intervention, medical rehabilitation or respite.

Easter Seals’ Early Intervention program consists of physical, occupational and speech therapists who work together with early childhood educators to help children with disabilities or developmental delays under the age of 3 reach their full potential. Often with early intervention, children can overcome delays by the time they are ready for school.

Easter Seals in Kent County served 181 children in early intervention, Easter Seals Delaware President/CEO Bill Adami said.

Safeway employs several individuals with disabilities through Easter Seals. This past April, the supermarket chain raised more than $20,000 for Easter Seals Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore by asking customers if they wanted to contribute a dollar or more to support disability services.

Easter Seals offers a range of services, including outpatient rehabilitation therapy, early intervention services for children, day services for adults with physical disabilities and cognitive disabilities and assistive technology services to increase the functional capabilities of people with disabilities.
