Delaware State Police are investigating the theft of a $6,000 television destined for the USO at Dover Air Force Base.

The theft occurred between 8:30 and 9:15 p.m. Feb. 4 from the parking lot of the TJ Maxx store on Concord Pike, Wilmington, said police spokesman Senior Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh.

A USO representative had driven a fully-marked USO van to the Best Buy store on Concord Pike, where she picked up the television and then went to the TJ Maxx store, Whitmarsh said. After finished at the clothing store, the woman drove back to Dover Air Force Base.

Once there, she noticed the driver’s side door was stuck, and turned on the interior light to see the box containing the television had been cut open and the flat screen TV was gone. She then noticed the driver’s side door lock had been damaged.

The television was to be installed at a lounge on Dover AFB for use by deploying and returning military personnel and their families, Whitmarsh said.

The TJ Maxx store did not have a surveillance camera monitoring the area of the parking lot where the van was parked.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Delaware State Police at Troop 1, Wilmington, at 761-6677 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333.
