One of the two civilians involved in an altercation on Oct. 24 with two off-duty police officers in the 300 Block of North Union Street has come forward to give a formal statement about the incident.
The statement was taken by the Wilmington Police Department in the city’s Law Department conference room on Monday, Nov. 16 because the civilian had expressed concerns about giving the statement at Wilmington Police Department headquarters, city Communications Director John Rago said.
The incident occurred in the 300 Block of North Union Street when two civilians, an off-duty Wilmington police officer and an off-duty Delaware state trooper became involved in “an altercation.”
Wilmington police have had difficulty with its investigation into the incident because the civilians were reluctant to provide statements about what happened. Mayor James Baker and Police Chief Michael Szczerba had urged the civilians to step forward so the investigation could be completed.
Baker and Szczerba thanked the individual who came forward and urged the second civilian to also make arrangements to give his statement.
Late last week, Szczerba had said that unless the civilians responded by this week to the request to file a formal statement about the incident he would consider the department's investigation complete and give the findings to the Attorney General's Office for review.
