Delaware State Police authorities have obtained an arrest warrant for inmate Ruben Porter, 25, in connection with a stabbing at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Smyrna.

Porter will be charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault in a detention facility and possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony, said police spokesman Senior Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh.

The date and time of Porter’s arraignment have not been established, Whitmarsh said.

The incident took place at approximately 7:30 p.m. March 16, said Department of Correction spokeswoman Kate Bailey. The facility was immediately secured and placed on lockdown, said Department of Correction spokeswoman Kate Bailey; it remains on lockdown as of 1 p.m. March 17.

Porter, of Wilmington, is accused of stabbing a 22-year-old correctional officer twice in the upper body with a homemade shank during an unprovoked assault in Building 21 of the Maximum Housing Unit. After that assault, Porter is accused of throwing down the shank and physically assaulting a second officer, causing an injury to his face. Additional correctional officers came to the area and subdued Porter.

The stabbed officer, who joined the Department of Correction in July 2007, was flown to Christiana Hospital for surgery. His injuries are not considered life threatening and the hospital reports he is in good condition, Bailey said.

The other officer, who is 53 and has been with the department for more than eight years, was taken to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover for treatment and evaluation of his facial injury and later released.

The DOC is declining to release the names of the officers, Bailey said, but may do so in the future.

Porter has been jailed since May 2002 on charges of attempted robbery first, assault first, possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is scheduled for release in 2020.

Delaware State Police are continuing the criminal investigation of this incident, while JTVCC Internal Affairs continues the internal investigation, Bailey said.

In a statement, DOC Commissioner Carl Danberg expressed his appreciation for DSP’s support.

“Delaware State Police officers responded to JTVCC as well as to both hospitals and were of great assistance to the department,” Danberg said.
