Delaware State Police are looking for a homeless man believed to be the gunman in a Nov. 13 shooting near Dover.

The suspect is Daemont L. Wheeler, 29, who is thought to have ties to Harrington and Dover, said state police spokesman Senior Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh.

The shooting took place at approximately 9 a.m. Nov. 13, at a home on John Clark Road in the Rodney Village subdivision.

“The incident was sparked by a domestic dispute,” Whitmarsh said. “Simply put, Wheeler and the 48-year-old male victim were involved with women from the same family and they, Wheeler and the victim, don’t like each other.

“This ongoing hatred came to a head last evening during an argument, when it is alleged Wheeler produced a handgun and shot the victim multiple times while at the John Clark Road residence,” Whitmarsh added.

Police do not know what the argument was about, he said.

Wheeler ran after the shooting, prompting the ongoing search, Whitmarsh said. The shooting victim is in serious condition at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, where he was taken for emergency surgery.

Police have obtained arrest warrants charging Wheeler with attempted murder.

No description has been issued, other than Wheeler was wearing a dark jacket and dark jeans at the time of the incident.

Whitmarsh emphasized Wheeler kept the handgun after the shooting and is considered a danger to the public.

Anyone with information on Wheeler’s whereabouts is asked to call Troop 3 at 697-4455, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333.
