Deputy chief to retire, promotions announced

Dover Deputy Chief of Police Maj. Ray Taraila will retire following 27 years of service with the Dover Police Department.

Taraila served in various positions within the police department, to include the patrol unit, motorcycle section and the criminal investigations unit. After being promoted to lieutenant, he served as commander of both the patrol and internal affairs units. In 2001, Taraila was promoted to the rank of captain and served as the operations division commander until his promotion to major in 2005.

With Taraila’s retirement, a number of officers will be promoted:

  • Capt. James Hosfelt will be promoted to major and will serve as deputy chief.
  • Lt. Paul Bernat will be promoted to captain and assume command of the operations division.
  • Sgt. Rob Scott will be promoted to lieutenant and will serve as commander of the patrol unit.
  • Det. Jason Pires will assume the rank of sergeant and will be assigned to the patrol unit as a shift commander.
  • Det. Jeff Melvin will be promoted to master corporal, continuing in his duties in the criminal investigations unit.

A promotion and awards ceremony is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 in the Public Assembly Room of the Dover Police Department.
