Nurses Josephine “Josie” Orosco of Dover and Debra Passwaters of Milford received the 2009 Second Quarter DAISY Awards in special ceremonies at Milford Memorial and Kent General Hospitals, respectively. Presented in collaboration with the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the award is part of a program to recognize the extraordinary efforts nurses perform everyday.
The awards are presented quarterly to a nurse from Kent General Hospital and Milford Memorial Hospital. Each honoree receives a certificate commending him or her as an extraordinary nurse as well as a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Africa.
Milford ICU nurse Orosco was taking care of a terminally ill man who was retired from the military. His daughters lived in another state and had not been in contact with him in recent years. He had expressed to Orosco his desire to have a military funeral, and when he passed away, his daughters needed assistance arranging the funeral. Orosco collaborated with her co-worker and oncoming night shift nurse Ketta Harris to assist the family in getting information for them. Orosco called the only contact she knew in the military, her own brother, to obtain information she passed on to the family. The patient’s daughter called the contacts that Orosco had obtained and the procedures for a military funeral were put in place immediately.
Bayhealth–Kent Home Care nurse Passwaters was nominated because of the compassion she showed one of her patients. She was doing home visits on a patient whose husband was deceased and who had no family near by to assist her. During the course of the home care episode, Passwaters found out the patient had not been to her husband’s grave for quite some time, so she made arrangements on her day off to take the patient to the cemetery…
