The Delaware Department of Correction is mourning the loss of an officer who worked at the Vaughn Correctional Center north of Smyrna.

Elijah Green, 21, of Newark, died in a motorcycle crash Monday on Route 273 in Newark, according to Delaware State Police.

"It is with great sadness that the Delaware Department of Correction announces the death of Correctional Officer Elijah Green," said DOC spokesperson Jayme Gravell in a press release. "He will be regarded with much affection and remembered as a well-respected officer always diligent in his duties."

Green joined the DOC family last summer and graduated from the Correctional Employee Initial Training Academy July 7, 2017. He was assigned to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center. Green was also a corrections specialist in the Army Reserves.

DOC Commissioner Perry Phelps said, "Correctional Officer Elijah Green was a promising young man with a bright future at the Department of Correction. He will be greatly missed by everyone he encountered. The DOC family mourns alongside his loved ones and friends.”

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

After the preliminary investigation, police said the incident occurred at about 12:58 p.m., on eastbound Route 273 eastbound east of Ruthar Drive.

Green was driving east on a Kawasaki ZX600P8 and had just cleared the intersection at Ruthar Drive. He was in the left lane and for unknown reasons he began to lose control of the motorcycle and struck the guardrail in the median just as he was beginning to curve to the right. The front tire became dislodged during the collision with the guardrail.

He was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle continued to travel on its side, coming to a stop in the right lane of Route 273 eastbound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel, police said.

Green was wearing a helmet.

Route 273 eastbound was closed east of Ruthar Drive for about two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
