Child struck died of injuries

UPDATE: Delaware State Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Seaford.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 12, around 5 p.m., as a white, 2002 Mazda Protégé was traveling northbound on German Road, just south of Old Furnace Road. A 9-year-old resident of German Road had just finished checking the mailbox and was walking back to her home when she was struck by the Mazda, which continued northbound, fleeing the scene. 

The 9-year-old sustained major injuries and was removed from the scene by the Delaware State Police helicopter. On Saturday, April 14, she died of her injuries.

Through investigative measures, troopers located the operator of the Mazda, 21-year-old Dwayne R. McConnell of Seaford. On Monday, April 16, McConnell was charged with operation of a vehicle causing death of another person, inattentive driving, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, failure to report a collision resulting in injury or death and possession of marijuana. He was later released on $6,151 unsecured bond.

UPDATE: On Saturday, April 14, at about 10:50 p.m., the 9-year-old child in this incident died due to her injuries. No charges have been filed at this time.

UPDATE: Delaware State Police are investigating a serious hit and run crash that left a 9-year-old child in critical condition last evening.

The preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred on Thursday, April 12, at around 5 p.m., as a white, 2002 Mazda Protégé was traveling northbound on German Road, just south of Old Furnace Road. The child had just finished checking the mailbox and was walking back to her residence when she was struck by the Mazda, which continued northbound, fleeing the scene. 

The 9-year-old sustained major injuries and was removed from the scene by the Delaware State Police helicopter. She was flown to A.I. Dupont Children’s Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

Troopers located the operator of the Mazda, a 21-year-old Seaford man, but charges have not been filed at this time.

German Road between Concord Pond Road and Old Furnace Road was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident and ask anyone with information to contact Master Corporal J. The crash occurred at around 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, and has closed German Road between Old Furnace and Concord Pond Road.
