Gene Truono, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, recently donated $900 to fulfill a commitment he made on Vietnam Veterans Day in Georgetown.
Truono attended a March 29 ceremony in the Town Circle to honor Sussex Countians lost in Vietnam when he heard a speaker mention Delaware's Gold Star monument committee was $900 short of its 30-day, $20,000 campaign goal toward building a Gold Star Monument to be located at the Delaware Memorial Bridge Veterans Memorial Park, New Castle.
The Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation's Gold Star monuments honor the families of those lost in defense of the country. The 40-acre park includes a reflecting pool, statuary and three walls containing the names of 15,000 men and women from Delaware and New Jersey who were killed in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf to date. The anticipated target date for completion is Sept. 25.
